Understanding WMA Age Grading & Performance Standards
What is Age Grading?
Age grading is a method to adjust a runner's performance against the world standard time for their exact age and gender. Developed by World Masters Athletics (WMA), it allows runners of any age—from 18 to 100—to compete fairly on a single standardized leaderboard.
Why Doesn't WMA Include Elevation?
Official WMA standards are designed for certified flat road courses. In official road racing, courses vary widely and elevation is considered part of course difficulty rather than an age adjustment. Our optional Grade-Adjusted Pace (GAP) tool estimates what your effort equals on a flat course for your own training insights.
